I did, but only because I reviewed it. Check the game’s website and you’ll find Netflix sitting pretty next to all the other platforms Oxenfree 2 has been released on. Yet despite the indie being fairly highly anticipated, and possibly the biggest game with a day one launch on the streaming platform thus far, Netflix hasn’t been making much kerfuffle about it. The first Oxenfree was critically acclaimed, with nominations at The Game Awards and the BAFTAs. You’d think that Netflix would capitalise on that to call attention to its largely overlooked game collection, but seems to barely market its games at all.

<![CDATA[Oh Great, Elon Musk Is Having A Tantrum About Meta's Threads]]> If you’re on Twitter, you’re likely already up to date with Elon Musk’s various missteps as Twitter’s owner and ‘Chief Twit’. He’s run the company into the ground, made the platform terrible for users, and in his most recent move, rate-limited tweets so that users could only see a certain number of tweets per day. This has since been silently reversed, but it was the straw that broke the camel’s back for many. People have been fleeing to alternative platforms ever since, convinced that Twitter will never regain its functionality. Threads is one of those platforms, and while I have serious issues with its privacy policy and its overall terrible vibes, it seems a whole lot more functional than Twitter.

<![CDATA[Piracy Is Coming Back, Baby!]]> This week, Disney removed a film called Crater from Disney Plus, which had been released on May 12, 2023. This means it was on the streaming platform for just 48 days, or about seven weeks. Disney hasn’t said why, but it seems most likely that it didn’t perform well enough and the company decided to remove it to write down the value of its “content assets”, therefore lowering their taxes. It’s all about the money, and always has been, and there are unfortunate consequences that come with this.

<![CDATA[xQc Trying To Buy Magic The Gathering's The One Ring Proves Cards Are Now A Lottery]]> There has always been an element of risk to trading cards. You buy a booster pack without knowing what's in it, and you might get cards that are great, cards that are rubbish, or cards that you already have. My first experience with this whole phenomenon wasn't with trading cards at all, but with football stickers, where everything could be split into two categories: 'got' and 'need'. In the modern world, things are not so pure and simple. There is a complex economy to trading cards these days, where value is arbitrary and through the ceiling. Nowhere is this more apparent than Magic the Gathering's The One Ring card in the new The Lord of the Rings expansion, as xQc's pursuit of it reveals.

<![CDATA[Here's Why Everyone Hates Kick Streaming]]> Livestreaming services come and go more often than the tides ebb and flow, lapping at the sandy shores of streamers’ daydreams in order to siphon as much money from viewers as possible before rapidly retreating, leaving only muddy estuary sand and abandoned dreams of stardom in their wake. You’ll know the fates of Vine and Mixer already, so why are streamers flocking to Kick, when it looks like just another faddy livestreaming service in a long line of failed Twitch clones? The reasons are numerous, and many of them deplorable.

<![CDATA[What Is xQc Doing At Kick?]]> xQc’s whole deal is that he’s a provocateur. His entire career, he has built his audience by existing right on the edge of the line. He’s had five different bans from Twitch, for everything from watching the Olympics to showing gorillas having sex, and streaming as an agent of chaos has brought him huge success. None huger than his move to Kick, for which he has been paid an NBA-style salary of $70 million over two years, which could rise to $100 million. But that only makes what he’s doing with his time even more confusing.

<![CDATA[If Any Tech Wants To Succeed, It Must Embrace Gaming]]> Everybody wants a slice of the future. It's something in the way capitalism moves - it used to be enough to just make more money than you spent, then it was the grind to make more money year on year to appease the shareholders, and now even that's not enough. What companies are doing now is not as straightforward as just trying to make money, they are making plans to make money a decade from now. That's why, despite being highly experimental, companies are rushing to make use of NFTs, the Metaverse, AI, AR, and VR. Some, most, or even all of these brave new worlds could fail. But one thing's for sure - whatever the future is, gamers will be in the driver's seat.

If we saw a child running into the road, or lost and scared in the supermarket, we’d want to help them. We have a compulsion as a species to protect children from harm, which is why Nickmercs and people like him latch onto this phrase. But the context of Nickmercs’ remarks is key, and he commented under a video of Proud Boys attacking LGBT activists, causing Call of Duty to remove his skin pack from sale.

Granted, Apple dates back to the '80s and always had a lot of money, so it wasn't the scrappiest of underdogs, but when the iPod dropped and those iconic black silhouettes danced against those flashing colourful backgrounds, it felt like the future had arrived. You could have 1,000 songs in the palm of your hand! One whole thousand! It feels silly in the modern world of streaming and everything at the tips of our fingers, but back then I didn't even know there were 1,000 songs in the world. Apple used to make you feel like you were part of the future, but recently it has fallen behind. Its latest, highly expensive Apple Vision Pro headset, feels like a make or break moment.

I still believe cloud gaming is the future, even if Google isn’t going to be the one that leads us there, and I’ve been spending some time trying out the other game streaming services to see how they stack up. Two of the best options right now are Game Pass and Amazon Luna, but neither of them quite lives up to the cloud gaming future Stadia once promised. Both are missing the exact qualities that the other has, and if they could somehow be combined, they’d make one pretty great streaming service.

Simply not covering the game would be the right move, but most are giving into the hype and rose-tinted glasses of their childhoods rather than addressing the transphobic elephant in the room. Over the weekend, Amouranth tearfully revealed that her husband had been systematically abusing her, and despite the impossible standards, she seemed to have incontrovertible proof. <![CDATA[xQc's Gambling Streams Are So Much Worse Than The Twitch Fart Meta]]> Last year, the fart meta was the talk of the Twitch town. As the name suggested, it involved streamers farting - often conventionally attractive female streamers in skin-tight clothing - for the pleasure of their viewers. However, the actual meta was quite a bit more varied than that. It also involved suggestive yoga, licking microphones, moaning breathily, writing subs' names on their skin, and wearing a Spider-Gwen lycra morph suit and a horse head mask while jumping up and down on the bed. One of those is fake, and it's definitely not the one you're thinking of. The fart meta was a spin-off from the hot tub meta - the former essentially brought softcore adult content on Twitch into the mainstream perception, and the latter used that as a springboard to help streamers gain popularity and notoriety with ever weirder, yet still erotically tilted, content. xQc was one of the loudest critics of these metas, but all the while was brewing up something that stank even worse: the gambling meta.

<![CDATA[Twitch's Stream Display Ads Are Genius]]> Everyone hates adverts. You can’t turn on the television, get on a bus, walk through town, or go online without being pelted by the damn things. Sometimes, you’ll be eating food, and the packaging for that food will be advertising different food to you, either with discounts or flashy branding pointing you to a limited time item. Even right now, as you scroll through your favourite games website, you’re having to read ads. That last one is important, because those ads pay my salary. That’s true of most writers on the internet these days, although ads also pay the salaries - or at least a portion of the salaries - of many people working in online industries. Few of these, however, have as tumultuous a relationship with advertising as Twitch streamers, which is why the platform’s new advert initiative is such a breath of fresh air.

<![CDATA[Twitch's New Spotify Plug-In Saves Streamers From Copyright DCMA Strikes]]> Few laws are applied as stringently as copyright laws. We live in a world of crossovers, franchises, multiverses, and Space Jam sequels, where just owning a property can see you set for life if said property is valuable enough. It’s why Disney has repeatedly pushed to change copyright laws to keep its characters out of the public domain, and why the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) is the bane of many a Twitch streamer. DMCA law is complicated, but for now, let’s keep it simple; it means you can’t play music you don’t own on Twitch. There’s a new solution for that problem, and it seems to be a pretty ingenious one, but exactly how sustainable is it?

<![CDATA[The Decline Of Streaming and Streamer Culture On Youtube]]> Over 13 years ago, the birth of YouTube had introduced the internet to an assortment of low-quality, homemade videos. Nowadays, the site is among the most wide-reaching and successful social media platforms on the internet, housing anywhere from breaking news stories to DIY crafting. The gaming atmosphere didn't penetrate YouTube's inner circle until the introduction of Blame Truth. All he did was upload videos of himself playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and added his voice over the footage, giving general direction on how best to play the game. Another well-known early gaming YouTuber was xcalizorz, who ignored the commentary aspect and decided instead to showcase himself playing 55 levels of the same game, calling it "Road to Commander." They may not have been the best videos (YouTube surely had worse at the time), but it opened up a new medium for gamer expressionism. A whole new frontier had been unearthed, a place for opinions to be digested, where tips could be explained in great detail and, most importantly, where gameplay could be shared and viewed in a collective environment.
