Terraria is a 2D pixel-art sandbox developed by Re-Logic and released in 2011. It offers the ability to craft and build similar to Minecraft while also being encouraged to explore a vast 2D procedurally generated world ala Metroidvania games. Besides crafting weapons and armor, building your base of operations is one of Terraria’s charms.

Starting from a rudimentary box-type base to a complicated multi-layered fortress, building your base will offer both challenge and enjoyment. Whether you construct underground, above ground, or up in the sky, it's crucial to have an understanding of the ins and outs of these locations. If you plan on setting up a floating home in Terraria, there are several factors to consider for creating the best possible Skybase.

5 The Defense Of Your Skybase Is Important

Before you even begin laying the first brick, improving the defense of your base should be the first thing on your list. One of the primary reasons why players are enticed into building a skybase is its complete protection against Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow. While you will still need to contend with the spread of these evil biomes, having your base above ground, away from the corrosive effects, will be one less thing on your mind. As a bonus, surviving Blood Moon's events is also easier with a skybase.

That said, Terraria hosts a slew of threats not only at ground level but also up in the sky. The enemies that you should be wary of when building a skybase are the harpies and the wyverns. These enemies can do a number on your base and any NPC residing within so you'll want to avoid them.

4 The Best Height To Build A Skybase

To know how to avoid harpy and wyvern attacks, you need to have a Depth Meter in your inventory and learn the spawn heights of these two nasty beasts. For harpies, these monsters spawn at 322 feet above for small worlds and 600 to 850 feet above for medium and large worlds, respectively. Wyverns will spawn at the same height as harpies.

What you want is for the topmost part of your skybase to be at least 45 blocks below the 322-foot spawn point. This should effectively help avoid the risks of harpy and wyvern attacks. As a rule of thumb, a height of 20 blocks is more than enough to protect your skybase from corruption while also keeping it out of sight of flying enemies.

3 Build A Connecting Hellevator As Soon As possible.

Building a hellevator can make life easier if you have a skybase. This mechanism serves as a shortcut from your base to The Underworld, where the best materials and items can be found.

A word of warning, though, as The Underworld is the most dangerous area in the game. Do not venture there without proper preparation. If you're still early into the game, ropes and teleporters will allow for a smoother transition on and off your floating base. You don't want a shortcut that spells doom.

2 Enhancing Your Skybase’s Aesthetics

With the basics of defense done, it is time to start building an eye-catching skybase. One material that will boost the cool factor of your skybase is meteorite bricks. You will need one meteorite and one stone block to craft two meteorite bricks and the result is eye-catching to say the least.

What makes this building material highly recommended is its unique property of emitting a faint glow at night. Infusing your skybase with carefully placed meteorite bricks will give it an otherworldly glow and a highly aesthetically pleasing and striking feature.

As for materials, the essential ones for creating a sky-worthy base include:

  • Clouds
  • Skyware
  • Sky Wood

These three materials will be the crux of your floating domicile in Terraria, so be sure to stock up accordingly depending on your desired blueprint. As an added note, refrain from utilizing natural blocks when building a base on a floating island, as it can cause enemies to spawn on those blocks. If you must use natural blocks, make sure to have NPCs with you, as they can prevent mobs from spawning.

To fully utilize every available material within the game, it is recommended that you download the map called Builder’s Workshop, as this will provide you with everything you will need to create whatever type of skybase design you desire.

1 Do Not Leave Empty Spaces In The Interior

A common mistake when creating a base in Terraria is leaving the interior hollow and lifeless. Once you have the overall structure built, it is time to populate it with rooms and furniture. Remember that Terraria won’t punish you for leaning a bit toward style over function so just decorate however you like.

As for the look of your base, this is where the beauty of Terraria’s building mechanics comes into play. There is no limit to what you can create. Whether it’s steampunk, sci-fi, or gothic, the world of Terraria is your oyster, and your only limitation is your imagination.
