Zonai Devices, Explained
Another remnant of the Zonai, Zonai devices help Link access the land of Hyrule in new ways. Whether you're building vehicles with which to explore above, under, and throughout Hyrule, or finding new combat strategies, there's something for everyone with the Zonai devices in Tears of the Kingdom.
In the table below, we explain all Zonai devices, and their primary function.
Zonai Devices And What They Do
Zonai Device | Description | Usage Notes |
---|---|---|
A Zonai hot air balloon used to gain height. | You'll need a source of flame beneath it to make it rise, be it a campfire, Flame Emitter, or otherwise. | |
A Zonai device to temporarily stop your other Zonai devices from using Link's Energy Cells. | The amount of energy each Battery has is visible inside, and will drain as you use Zonai devices to which it's attached. The more devices attached, the more drain on your Battery. | |
A Zonai device that fires beams of light capable of doing significant damage at a far range. | The effective range makes them excellent for added security on mechs, and for keeping your distance from enemies. | |
A larger size of the standard Zonai device Battery. | The Big Battery functions the same as the regular Battery, but they have several times as much power in them. That said, they're typically more difficult to find, appearing only in treasure chests around Hyrule. | |
A Zonai device to make your vehicles drive, and are capable of handling tougher terrains like lava, shallow water, small rocks, bumps, and more. | They're more powerful than Small Wheels, making them the best choice in environments that aren't flat. The arrows denote which way the wheels will move when the device is powered on, so make sure your Big Wheels are all facing the same direction. | |
A Zonai device that fires exploding shots at targets further away. | The aim on the Cannon can be tricky if you're using it manually, as Link won't throw the cannonball dead-on. Cannons can be more effective when connected to other Zonai devices like Construct Heads for use in homing attacks. | |
A flat Zonai device with wheels on the bottom, capable of moving across flat surfaces. | You need to apply force to get your Carts moving, but they're reliable once they're in motion. They're great additions to the bottom of Wings to make a makeshift runway for yourself when crafting a plane. | |
A Zonai device that keeps an eye out for enemies. | Ineffective on their own, you'll need to attach another damage-dealing Zonai device to a Construct Head (like one of the Emitters or a Cannon) in order to turn it into a homing device. They're of great use when put on the front of vehicles, as they'll handle incoming enemies for you as you drive. | |
A Zonai device that produces wind with their propellors to move you forward through air or water. | The more Fans you have attached to something, the stronger the push it generates. They're most effective when attached to the tops of Wings, and to the submerged lower parts of your boats or rafts for water propulsion. | |
A Zonai device that shoots fire. | Emitters are best used when on shields or fused to weapons to give you some real firepower. They're also effective when paired with Balloons for a more permanent source of flame. | |
A Zonai device that shoots freezing air. | Like the Flame Emitter, Frost Emitters are best used as additions to shields or to fusing weapons. Any enemy hit by the blast will freeze solid, allowing for a smash bonus if you hit them with a melee attack while they're frozen. | |
A Zonai device that travels over flat ground and homes in on enemies. | Like the Construct Head, the Homing Carts are best when they're carrying something else. Emitters are still efficient here, as are Time Bombs. | |
A Zonai device that stays in place in midair when activated, through which Link can Ascend if need be. | Hover Stones slowly sap your energy the longer they float, but they're an excellent way to make some makeshift stairs. You can also use them to Ascend up to some quick height when fighting enemies where higher ground is distinctly advantageous, such as Gloom Hands, Lynels, or Gleeoks. | |
A Zonai device that emits water wherever it's stuck. | The best use for Hydrants is to make platforms in lava, which you can use to ride lava rivers or access hidden rooms. | |
A Zonai device emitting light in dark places. | The Light doesn't have the longest range, but it is a constant source of light if you need it. That said, Brightblooms function the same way when affixed to vehicles or mechs, and don't consume your energy. | |
A Zonai device that reflects beams of light. | While some monsters can be fended off with light, you'll unsurprisingly find yourself using Mirrors quite a lot in the Gerudo Desert and surrounding shrines. | |
A Zonai device that allows Link to cook one meal or elixir. | The Portable Pot will disappear after one use, and it can only be used in places where normal cooking pots would work (largely anywhere it's not raining). That said, they also act like joints for vehicles if you attach a Big Wheel to the Portable Pot before attaching it to your cars, giving you extra off-roading capabilities. | |
A Zonai device that produces a powerful thrust. | Attach Rockets to shields for an instant boost, which can be helpful when fighting enemies where height is advantageous. You can also affix Rockets to any vehicles for an extra boost. Putting a plane directly on top of a vertical Rocket can give you height before Link soars horizontally across the skies. | |
A Zonai device that fires electricity from its horn when struck. | The horn on the Shock Emitter is the only part that's actually electrified, meaning Link is able to safely hold the device if need be. If you have the Yiga schematic for the Fishing Trawler, it also makes for an extremely effective way to catch bulk amounts of fish. | |
A Zonai device with a smooth underside. | Sleds function much like Carts, but without the wheels, making them a better choice when trying to cross sandy, snowy, or icy terrain. | |
A Zonai device that spins quickly to move across flat surfaces. | If you're trying to head out across flat terrains, Small Wheels consume much less power than Big Wheels. That said, they struggle to handle even the smallest bumps in the road, so choose a Wheel size based on the terrain you need to cross. | |
A Zonai device that expands and contracts to bounce things away from it. | Springs can be used on your shields to keep enemies at a distance when they hit you, or placed on the ground to be used to offer Link some additional height. They can be angled to fire in different directions. | |
A Zonai device that stands perfectly upright when active, straightening anything to which it's attached. | Not only can Stabilizers help you make a platform to Ascend to that won't wobble when you emerge, but they're also extremely helpful in helping Addison hold up signs. | |
A Zonai device that can be planted into the ground or wall as footholds. | Unless you hit the device again when it's in the ground, Stakes don't move. You can use them as jacks to make vehicles, hold platforms at angles, and more. | |
A Zonai device that allows Link to maneuver his vehicles at will. | Attach Steering Sticks to your cars or planes for complete control in their direction. You can activate all Zonai devices on a build by engaging the Steering Stick, meaning you can take off with ease by simply assuming control of your vehicles. | |
A Zonai device that detonates a timed explosion. | Time Bombs will attract the attention of your enemies if fired into an enemy camp, luring them in and exploding them once they're curious to give you a leg up in combat. You can also attach them to shields to damage enemies with them without taking damage yourself, or even place them carefully and fire an arrow from a distance if need be. Be warned that any Zonai device in range of the Time Bomb will activate if hit by the explosion. | |
A Zonai device that can harness the lift of the wind. | Though you can steer a Wing with just Link's body weight, it's much easier to control when you attach a Steering Stick. Pairing Wings with a few Fans is a great way to close distances too vast for your Paraglider, if you have the energy to go the distance. |
These are simply the in-game descriptions of the Zonai devices - how you actually use your own Zonai devices is totally up to you.
What Are Zonai Device Dispensers?
In Tears of the Kingdom, Zonai devices are pivotal to navigating the various regions of Hyrule using your Ultrahand ability to craft things like imaginative vehicles, powerful mechs, and more.
You're introduced to them during your beginning scenes on Great Sky Island, able to purchase a number of items from one before heading down to the surface to use them in all kinds of "creative" ways.
These gachapon-style machines function kind of like a bubblegum machine - drop Zonaite into the receptacle at the bottom, and receive an assortment of Zonai Devices stocked within that machine.
Zonai dispenser can get jammed, so if you think you've gotten too few Zonai devices, always double-check!
Link can hold up to five items in his hands at once, so the number of capsules you'll receive will vary based on how much Zonaite you put in. The more Zonaite you drop in, the bigger your haul, with Large Zonaite yielding more capsules per unit than regular Zonaite.
Each Dispenser holds a different selection of Devices. No two Dispensers have the same exact menu, meaning you'll be exploring the skies over Hyrule quite a bit trying to collect everything you need.
The dispensers each carry between three and six different items per machine, offering a pretty wide assortment at each. Once they're in your possession, you can then fuse Zonai devices to things like weapons, shields, and so much more.

All Sky Island Zonai Device Dispenser Locations
Since you're dealing with Zonai technology here, it should come as no surprise that you'll spend quite a lot of time among the sky islands and archipelagos up there, searching for shrines, materials, and - of course - device dispensers.
The easiest way to access these if you're not already headed there through main questlines is to use the Skyview Towers to get the height you need. Once you've activated shrines around the Sky Islands, these are helpful as well to get you back to this Zonai dispenser even quicker.
Then, between your paraglider, Tulin (if you've finished the Rito main story arc), and various moving platforms, you'll be able to navigate throughout the sky islands.
The information in this section is broken into sections of the sky, then down further by the archipelago it's in.
