Nick Nelson arguing with his asshole of an older sibling when it comes to his boyfriend, all while a defensive mother backs him up. Or Charlie Spring looking back on the bullying he experienced as the only out person in his whole school. Moments of young love and queer hardship that thousands will relate to. Alice Oseman brings it all to life with untold authenticity because she has clearly lived what it means to grow up LGBTQ+ in the UK, while lining these experiences with a respectful dose of heartwarming sweetness.

<![CDATA[Don’t Sleep On The Best Straight-To-Netflix Movie Of The Year]]> I’m as aware as anyone that Netflix doesn’t typically release excellent movies. I’d go so far as to say the majority of straight-to-Netflix movies are mediocre to bad, and I now consider Netflix movies without a theatrical release immediate red flags. During my semi-monthly movie night with friends, we trawl through every streaming service available to us in an attempt to find just one film that looks good. It can be difficult sometimes, especially once you get into the Netflix exclusives.

<![CDATA[Netflix Games Is Doomed To Failure If It Won't Promote Its Best Games]]> Did you know Oxenfree 2 is free-to-play if you have a Netflix subscription? I did, but only because I reviewed it. Check the game’s website and you’ll find Netflix sitting pretty next to all the other platforms Oxenfree 2 has been released on. Yet despite the indie being fairly highly anticipated, and possibly the biggest game with a day one launch on the streaming platform thus far, Netflix hasn’t been making much kerfuffle about it. The first Oxenfree was critically acclaimed, with nominations at The Game Awards and the BAFTAs. You’d think that Netflix would capitalise on that to call attention to its largely overlooked game collection, but seems to barely market its games at all.

Well, there is one thing they don't appear to be all that enamored with: The Chaos Council. The group of villains made up of different versions of Dr. Robotnik that have returned for season two to once again try to thwart Sonic and conquer the universe.

Now that Season 3 has released, it seems like the shows recent controversial decisions and lackluster marketing could be having an impact on viewership.

<![CDATA[Hollywood Is Rotten To The Core]]> The Screen Actors Guild is striking, and that’s great news for the Writers Guild of America. It is, however, terrible news for Hollywood. With actors now in the fold and beginning to strike, Hollywood will grind to a halt. Production on shows and movies will be impossible without actors, who will not be doing on- or off-camera work, auditions, rehearsals, or even publicity. The stars of Oppenheimer appeared on the red carpet of the film’s UK premiere before the screening began, but walked out of the event to “write their picket signs” once the strike was officially announced, according to director Christopher Nolan. The cast of Barbie has made its support for the strike known on red carpets, and Margot Robbie has said during the London premiere of the film that she will be striking too. Alongside filming, all press tours will stop (which means no more interview gold from Ryan Gosling, but I’m more than fine with that).

<![CDATA[Nimona Interview: Troy Quane And Nick Bruno On Bringing The Graphic Novel To Life ]]> Nimona has lit Netflix on fire since its release at the end of June. The animated adaptation of ND Stevenson’s beloved graphic novel is heartfelt, funny, and thrilling as it follows the hijinks of two unlikely heroes in a bold fantasy world. We’ve already caught up with Stevenson and the directing duo of Nick Bruno and Troy Quane about bringing the film back from the ashes of Blue Sky Studios, so it’s time for one final, emotional dive into this queer-coded epic.

And at first, fans hated him, mostly because he looks nothing like the robotic foe we've known and loved for almost exactly 20 years now. Well, and because his redesign seemed a little rough. However, you shouldn't judge a robot by his cover it seems, because now, fans can't get enough of the guy.

I care about award shows more than any normal person and more than most strange people too, but I just can’t bring myself to care this year. Whether it’s the writers on strike and the actors now joining them, the mindless favouritism towards two shows in particular, the continued ridiculousness of its categorisation (The Bear is a comedy?), or the controversy around several nominees, the Emmys just aren’t worth caring about this year.

My cat rolled over and meowed at me when I walked into my flat yesterday which was enough to set me off. <![CDATA[Liam Hemsworth Is Doomed To Fail In Netflix’s The Witcher]]> I don’t often feel sorry for celebrities, much less Liam Hemsworth. This is a man who has adequate acting ability and an attractive face in that standard Hollywood way that does it for teenagers and just about nobody else, and he has somehow been cast in some of the biggest franchises in the world. Who am I kidding, he’s been cast in those franchises for the exact reasons mentioned above. He’s a kinda hot, inoffensive white man – perfect for headlining your IP movie. Hollywood executives could only love him more if he was called Chris, but that would probably make family barbecues too confusing.

<![CDATA[You Don't Have To Watch The Witcher]]> Netflix’s The Witcher isn’t very good. It looks cheap, has wonky CGI, is filled with jokes that don’t land and dialogue that doesn’t fit, and struggles to build up its world in any meaningful way. It’s hard to care about the politics Geralt gets swept up in. To top it off, the spin-offs are diluting a pretty basic premise, stretching a world ill-designed for stretching too thin. I can’t see the show lasting more than another season.

Those who watch the show will probably know that Season 3 will be Henry Cavill's last appearance as Geralt of Rivia, as it was announced last year that Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role from Season 4 onward, a strange decision that has angered a large majority of those that still kept up with the show, as many are now boycotting Season 3 in protest.

This means it was on the streaming platform for just 48 days, or about seven weeks. Disney hasn’t said why, but it seems most likely that it didn’t perform well enough and the company decided to remove it to write down the value of its “content assets”, therefore lowering their taxes. It’s all about the money, and always has been, and there are unfortunate consequences that come with this.

<![CDATA[Don't Learn The Wrong Lessons From Henry Cavill Being A Witcher Fan]]> Making a fantasy series is hard. It might look easy, after the floodgates were opened by The Lord of the Rings, and then Game of Thrones became a cultural phenomenon, but it's very difficult. Fantasy stories are inherently silly, with dragons and magic and characters called L'othiralica Glordinthinga, yet often try to be dark and self-serious tales of sex and violence, loaded with political intrigue. Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher, despite a strong enough first season, has struggled in the face of these difficulties, and fans seem pretty clear on why.

In recent years, the media landscape is all about reboots, remakes, and sequels that can mitigate risk while amassing maximum profit. <![CDATA[Avatar: The Last Airbender Being A Casualty Of The Live-Action Remake Trend Is A Tragedy]]> In September 2018, Netflix announced that a live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender was in the works. This week, it’s finally given us an update: the series is slated to hit the platform in 2024, and I’m miserable about it. There’s nothing wrong with the announcement, technically. I am thrilled to see Asian and indigenous actors cast in the show, because that was a huge criticism of the previous attempt at a live-action remake of the original Nickelodeon version – so many white people, and so few Asians. <![CDATA[First Witcher Season 3 Poster Teases Final Henry Cavill Performance]]> The Witcher's third season hits Netflix later this year and while it won't be the last we see of the show, it will signify the end of an era. Henry Cavill will be stepping down as Geralt after three seasons as the lead character, with Liam Hemsworth taking his place from season four. We've still got one more season of Cavill's Geralt though, and the first official look at him, along with Ciri and Yennefer, has been shown off via a poster for season three.

<![CDATA[Leave Squid Game Alone, It Does Not Need An American Remake]]> There’s a rumour going around that Netflix is trying to get David Fincher to produce and direct an American remake of Squid Game. A tweet by The Ankler reporter Jeff Sneider on April 14 suggested that Netflix “want him to tackle this project BADLY”. It makes sense that Netflix wants to milk Squid Game for all its worth. After all, the original South Korean series was a runaway success, garnering multiple Golden Globe awards and fourteen Emmy nominations, winning six. It received global critical acclaim and remains Netflix's most-watched series at launch. Bloomberg estimated that by October 2021, it had generated almost $900 million in revenue.

<![CDATA[Streaming Services Need To Stop Cancelling Everything]]> Willow was cancelled this week, ending the Disney Plus reboot of the original movie after just eight episodes. During its brief stint, it got an 86 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but 66 percent audience score – this is probably what led to its cancellation. It’s well-known that there’s a line below which views cannot drop if a show is to keep being made, but there are a number of other reasons a show might get cancelled. There’s no way to know for sure why exactly it was canned, but all these reasons boil down to one root thing: money.

<![CDATA[Pokemon Concierge Is Right To Choose Animation Over Live Action]]> My heart was firmly in my throat when Netflix appeared on today’s Pokemon Presents. I was expecting the world of pocket monsters to follow in the footsteps of Cowboy Bebop and One Piece with live-action adaptations that recreated existing stories with a bizarre mixture of familiar actors and garish visual effects. The latter isn’t out in the wild yet, but fans have already drawn the conclusion that it will be impossible to adapt in live action without some serious concessions. I admire Cowboy Bebop’s campy execution, yet it lacked the original anime’s fierce character and humour, often seen as a big mess of cringe.

According to these guidelines, you would have to connect your devices to the Wi-Fi at your primary location to watch something on Netflix, at least once a month. To set a primary location, Netflix uses “IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity” to figure out if the device is at your primary location. If they don't, they will be blocked and need to contact Netflix to get things back to normal. (It's worth noting that these new rules were posted to Netflix's Help Center, but have already been removed, so the streamer may be reconsidering its plans or may not be ready to go public with them.)

<![CDATA[Casting A Video Game Knives Out Movie]]> There was a meme going around recently, which sounds like how a well-meaning but out of touch stepfather might start a conversation with his surly and distant stepson, involving Benoit Blanc and The Muppets. The idea was that Netflix’s Knives Out 3 should be an all Muppet cast aside from Daniel Craig as the very human Blanc, a la Michael Caine in A Muppet Christmas Carol. Perhaps ‘meme’ is a little generous. More accurate would be that one persona suggested this, got a lot of laughs (or at least a lot of likes on Twitter, which is how we display mirth to strangers these days) and, hungry for serotonin, attention, and those delicious, soul-warming likes, several others copied the idea and appeared to present it as their own. <![CDATA[The Witcher's Jaskier Labels Liam Hemsworth Brave For Replacing Henry Cavill]]> The team behind Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher had some big news to share earlier this year. <![CDATA[Anime To Watch After Netflix's Castlevania]]> Castlevania, the Netflix animated series adapted from the beloved series of Metroidvania games by the same name, is quite the show. Its last season put a nice touchstone on just about every character's journey, and it was quite the bombastic conclusion to yet another absolutely incredible game adaptation. It doesn’t rely on cutaway gags or toxic nihilism to drive its characters and narrative home, but an outwardly positive glimpse at how society continues to dunk on itself for believing in the wildest things.

<![CDATA[Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Is The Perfect Movie For Our Time]]> When I settled into my seat for Glass Onion: A Knives Out mystery, I thought I knew what to expect. With the murder mystery genre there is the need to expect the unexpected, but of course in expecting the unexpected the fact that there were twists, turns, and red herrings would not be a surprise in itself, even if the individual moments would still surprise. Confused? Just as I expected. What I did not expect, however, was that this would be the most perfect movie for our time.
