The Space Marines, more specifically the Ultramarines, are the Pikachu of Warhammer’s science-fiction wargame, minus the ears and plus a rifle filled with ammunition that explodes on impact. Don’t give Pikachu one of those.

<![CDATA[Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters Just Keeps Getting Better]]> I didn’t expect much from Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters. I’ll play any Warhammer game, from Ork shmups to RTS classics, but few keep me hooked as much as this XCOM-like from Complex Games. I fully expected to still be on board the Darktide train right now, but instead I’m directing little Grey Knights across the virtual battlefield to purge the rot of Nurgle from every planet I come across.

<![CDATA[Warhammer Is Bringing Back One Of Its Best Board Games]]> Warhammer has a vast array of board games, and they’re generally of very high quality. You’ve got the Bloodborne-esque style oozing from Cursed City, the brutal sporting contests of Blood Bowl, and cult classics like Mordheim that helped spawn myriad spiritual successors. None of these games have particularly robust rulesets, however, with the latter two especially relying heavily on dice rolls. If it’s rules you’re after, Games Workshop has you covered in different ways.

<![CDATA[It's Time For Warhammer's '90s Comic Series To Come Back]]> Warhammer is a behemoth nowadays. It’s always been big – bigger than the community would care to admit – but now it’s huge. Did you know that Games Workshop provided more for the UK economy last year than the entire fishing industry? Maybe that’s indicative of the rise of veganism or the need for fantasy escapism as the country descends further into the depths of hell, but toy soldiers are more popular than fish – you heard it here first.

<![CDATA[Genestealer Cults Are Warhammer 40,000 10th Edition's Biggest Winner]]> Warhammer 40,000 10th edition has gutted me. My poor Adeptus Mechanicus are dead, or at least lying face down in a pool of blood and engine oil, slowly bleeding out. I’m glad that the community of Ad Mech players is using the harsh nerfs as a means to embrace the cool models of the range, convert their own dudes, and write fun narrative lists to play their way, but I’m gutted we’re barely viable as a competitive force.

<![CDATA[The Adeptus Mechanicus Is Dead, Long Live The Adeptus Mechanicus]]> Warhammer 40,000 10th edition is here, and thanks to Games Workshop so kindly giving out all the rules for free, we know exactly how good every army currently is without having to spend a single penny. As well as being a shrewd business decision on the company’s part, it means that all the competitive players can quickly buy Eldar armies and all the Adeptus Mechanicus players can cry into their machine spirits. It’s me, I’m Adeptus Mechanicus players.

<![CDATA[Why Can’t I Stop Hoarding Dice?]]> One of the downsides of starting my first vanilla Dungeons & Dragons campaign is that it’s given me an excuse to get more dice. I like to theme my dice to whatever I’m doing, you see. My Warhammer 40,000 Tau have futuristic dice befitting their mech warfare style. My Grung swashbuckler has a nautical flavoured set of dice. My Dark Mechanicus have a hefty limited edition box of 100 dice complete with Mechanicum skulls. That should be enough dice for any game of any size, but if it’s not thematic, I’m not interested.

<![CDATA[Best Secrets In Warhammer 40K: Boltgun ]]> You are the Space Marine. You live, fight, and die for the Imperium. As the much-feared Ultramarine, you'll be getting your hands dirty. At least that's your life's calling in the game Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. This first-person shooter strips away all the complexities of modern shooters and kicks us back into the heyday of pixilated arena-shooters. It's the jolt of nostalgia and quick, frenetic action we all crave.

<![CDATA[2023 Is The Year I Embrace CRPGs]]> I’ve only played a few hours of CRPGs before this year, and I bounced off my first one hard. Divinity: Original Sin 2 was my first foray into the genre, at the behest of a housemate who had poured three figures of hours into it. He knew I liked fantasy, and we’d played Civilisation together for countless hours already, so he knew I wasn’t averse to whiling my life away in front of a screen, so it was a good recommendation.

<![CDATA[Warhammer Needs To Embrace 3D Printing]]> Games Workshop hates 3D printers. There's a good reason: a quick search of Warhammer forums will reveal multiple people selling competing 3D printed miniatures or even versions of Games Workshop’s own products. The Dawn of War and Total War series transfer your favourite units from table to screen, and the likes of Mechanicus and Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters add turn-based tactics to great effect. It’s like the game you play at your local gaming store, but from the comfort of your sofa and/or gaming chair.

<![CDATA[Warhammer Legend John Blanche Retires, Converts Female Marine]]> Art director John Blanche didn’t get me into Warhammer – that accolade goes to Peter Jackson and the Perry brothers for Games Workshop’s movie tie-in Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game – but he pulled me deeper. I collected huge armies and played weekend-long battles, but I was purely in the hobby to stomp my friends. I was the ideal teenage collector, in the eyes of Games Workshop if not my mum, in that I just wanted more stuff. I bought it, I poured superglue on it, slapped three colours onto vaguely appropriate places, and min-maxed my way to victory.

<![CDATA[Warhammer Has Quietly Stopped Crediting Its Staff]]> It’s easy to forget that behind every miniature, there are a dozen people who made it happen. Lion El’Johnson, the last big Warhammer reveal that caught my attention as a reformed member of the Fallen, was likely designed by many hands. A concept artist, maybe multiple, to start things off. Then 3D designers, and a sculptor too. I don’t know if Games Workshop has moved to digital sculpting rather than the old-fashioned method of creating a 300-percent-scale model for design purposes, but both methods require staff. Then you’ve got the people who make the moulds, pour the plastic, write the marketing copy, write the lore, and write the tie-in novel that sold out in minutes.

What’s worse, it’s working, as scalping continues to be a problem with every limited release and short-supplied product that us normies want to get our hands on. From Pokemon cards to gig tickets, scalpers have the software to skip the online queues and buy up as much stock as possible.
