If everyone is raving about the newest game, you’ll be inclined to pick it up so you can be a part of the conversation. All three will leave you on the sidelines if you don’t scramble to play them, but games are growing bigger with each new release—two of the ones I just mentioned are 60-hour RPGs. It’s a horrible cycle that ends only one way—burnout. You’re gonna turn a hobby into a chore and lose all love for it.

I've resisted playing too much of the early access version on PC because I want to sink in deep at the full release and not emerge for 100 hours, but I love it all the same. I love it like a pen pal. I love it at a distance. I hope that this imagined love crystalises into the real thing once I finally get my hands on it. But after years of watching it with admiration and respect from afar, now that it's drifting closer it's giving off bad vibes. It just can't close the deal. Never meet your heroes, kid. Well, that actually depends on what you plan on playing Baldur's Gate 3 on, actually, as well as when you're reading this. The release date of the highly-anticipated Dungeons & Dragons RPG was moved up to August 3 to avoid clashing with Starfield's arrival. However, if you want to play the next Baldur's Gate on PS5, you'll need to wait until September 5 because, well, PS5 owners won't be playing Starfield. <![CDATA[Other RPGs Should Learn From Baldur's Gate 3's Character Creator]]> We're approaching Baldur's Gate 3's release date, but I'd forgive you if you were a little confused by exactly when that is. The game has pulled off the trick of moving both forwards and backwards, launching August 3 on PC (up from August 31), September 6 on PlayStation (down from August 31), and the 21st of Never on Xbox (same date as ever). It could come out on Xbox in the future, with a technological hitch with the Xbox Series S responsible for its absence, but for now it's PC and PS players who can begin to look forward to the game. Many of them are looking forward to Karlach, an Origin character who has gotten the fanbase all hot under the collar - fitting for a Tiefling. Our dungeon master (Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley) has created a compelling world and all I’m asked to do is sit back, listen, and use my imagination. I was reminded of my affection for the game when I saw the ridiculous terms it has used to describe its own scale and found them to be charming rather than obnoxious. Baldur’s Gate 3 will have 174 hours of cinematics, which it puts into context by informing us it’s “more than every season of Game of Thrones, twice”. It reminds me of when Dying Light bragged it had more words than Anna Karenina, although Baldur’s Gate and Game of Thrones are more thematically related than Tolstoy’s tale of forbidden love and the nighttime zombies who run on walls.

The big problem with Breath of the Wild (and now Tears of the Kingdom) is that you can go anywhere and do anything. While too many games railroad you and punish you for thinking outside of the box, the two recent Zelda games make you the master of the world, while keeping you as a small and often insignificant part of it. For a lot of people, it's genius game design. However, many others feel lost in its aimlessness, wandering from place to place with no real goal nor clear idea of what's driving them forward. <![CDATA[Baldur's Gate 3 Is Coming To PS5, But An Xbox Release Hasn't Been Ruled Out Yet]]> After years in early access, Baldur's Gate 3 got another flashy trailer last night, revealing a JK Simmons-voiced villain, and most excitingly, a console port. However, Xbox fans were left disappointed, as the State of Play reveal only confirmed a PS5 release, seemingly skipping the Series X/S.

<![CDATA[Baldur's Gate 3 Won't Be Affected By Dungeons & Dragons' Updated OGL]]> There’s a storm raging in the Dungeons & Dragons community. Ever since leaked drafts of an updated Open Gaming License (OGL) leaked from Wizards of the Coast, the D&D community has been in an uproar over proposed changes that would initially have publishers pay a 25-percent royalty and could even have opened the door to content theft. Wizards has since issued apologies over OGL 1.1 and has promised a more open and transparent process for OGL 1.2, which was recently posted to the D&D Beyond website.

<![CDATA[The Most Iconic Druids In Gaming]]> Druids, surprisingly, have a reasonably broad definition. While we may primarily think of them in terms of a named class we can play as, such as in Dungeons & Dragons, the truth is countless characters fit the definition of druid without being explicitly called one. Generally, druids are practicers of wild magic - and there are a lot of characters who fit that bill.

This can be quite a tough choice, as higher ability scores will improve your reliability in and out of battle, but feats can add just as much power as well as some variety and flavor.

From role-playing as a Celtic demon king - and still getting my ass handed to me by Swen Vincke - to learning to love shoving smug little goblins off precariously high ledges, Baldur’s Gate 3’s small but excellent first section almost snuck its way into my top ten games of 2020. The announcement that it was launching in Early Access surprised people right from the get-go, which meant the ensuing delay appeared to come from even further out in left field. <![CDATA[Early Access Is My New Favourite Way To Play Games]]> I’ve been dabbling in Valheim lately and it’s brilliant. I love punching trees to death, except for when this leads to death by tree. I’m a big fan of building houses, except for when I see that other people have put together bonafide strongholds that are slightly more impressive than my four-by-four half-shack with no door and a thatched roof made up of enough different-sized cuts to make it asymmetry incarnate. I think it’s really cool and also really unfair that somebody was clever enough to construct a functional sundial that accurately tells the in-game time. Someone who is both cool and clever? Illegal.
