Capcom has stuck to the numbered editions of Resident Evil for its RE engine remakes so far. However, the studio has hinted it might have discussed remaking some of the series' spinoffs in the future, introducing them to an entirely new generation of fans.
The hint that it might not be as simple as Resident Evil 5 being the next game in the series to get the remake treatment comes from a comment made during a Capcom Q&A. Spotted by GamesRadar, when asked if Capcom plans on sticking to the numbered games in the series, a spokesperson for the studio replied, “We are carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of this series so it can be enjoyed by a wide audience.”
No, it's hardly confirmation that Capcom won't continue remaking the Resident Evil games in order, but an unwillingness to give a straightforward answer suggests the idea has at least been discussed. Capcom started its modern remakes with Resident Evil 2, presumably skipping the first game because it had technically been remade once already, albeit more than 20 years ago. It then remade Resident Evil 3 and moved on to 4 this year, the remake of which received critical acclaim at launch.
Resident Evil 5 might be a little trickier to remake which could well be why now is the perfect time for Capcom to venture off the path it has been treading for the past few years and remake something a little different. The most popular option appears to be Code Veronica. Launching between Resident Evils 3 and 4, fans of the series have already voiced their want for it to be remade. Even the voice actor for Claire Redfield has weighed in.
Capcom could go back even further and remake the original game next, or perhaps opt for the other game it released between 3 and 4, Resident Evil 0. As for other spinoff avenues it might consider, there are a lot to choose from. The two Revelations games may also be on the table. Going to those before moving on to 5 would undoubtedly fill a lot of time.
It's not as if Resident Evil fans don't have plenty to tide them over. If you are already done with 4's remake, its VR mode is currently in the works, coming to PS VR2 at no additional cost if you already own the base game. The remake also received an achievement update last month hinting that some sort of DLC is in the offing. There's also another live-action movie in the works. A bold move considering the reception for the recent Resident Evil Netflix show.
