Zombie and post-apocalyptic storylines are nothing new to video gaming, but they've never looked better than they have on the PS4 and PS5. With the great performance that these platforms offer and astounding refresh rates, you sometimes feel like you are coming face to face with the undead creatures in real life.
While some zombie games are downright terrifying, others take zombies in a comical and sometimes even funny direction. Other PS4 and PS5 zombie games might not be the best-looking games you’ve ever played, but they introduce zombies to novel genres like games based on road trips. If you’re interested in playing the best zombie games on PS4 and PS5, look no further.
Updated June 15, 2023 By Ben Jessey: While they don't exist in real life (yet), zombies are a common sight in the video game world. In fact, they're one of the most common enemy types in gaming history. You even fight them more often than Nazis.
As such, there are plenty of PS4 and PS5 zombie games. We put the best PlayStation zombies games on this list, but we couldn't fit them all, so a few great ones missed out. To help rectify this, we've done this update to add a few more.
13 Days Gone
Days Gone is an action-adventure title taking place in a post-apocalyptic version of Oregon. You play as a biker named Deacon St. John, who is on the search for his wife. He used to think she was dead, but a new piece of information suggests she might still be alive, so he's determined to find her.
This means roaming the open world, which is filled with countless zombie-like creatures. Thankfully, you have a motorbike, meaning you have a good way to get around. And when things do get violent, you have firearms to gun the creatures down.
12 Dead Island 2
The first Dead Island wasn't very well received by players or critics. Yet, the response to the sequel is much better.
It's a first-person open-world game set in Los Angeles. Yet, L.A. looks a bit different because the place is filled with zombies due to a recent outbreak. These creatures make roaming the world pretty difficult. Thankfully, there are all sorts of weapons and abilities you can use to get past or go through them.
11 The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a different kind of zombie experience, as it's more of a narrative adventure than a horror game. This means gameplay consists of interacting with things, partaking in QTEs, and making choices.
Some of the decisions you have to make are really important as they impact the overall story and how certain scenes play out. In fact, these choices can affect who lives or dies, so there are some tough ones. The tale you're altering is about a little girl called Clementine, who is stuck in a zombie apocalypse. When you meet her, she's just a scared child, but she grows a lot over the seasons.
10 The Last Of Us: Part 1
The original 2013 release of The Last of Us is still enjoyable and visually impressive, but the remake of the game for the Playstation 5 is astounding.
The Last Of Us is about Joel, the survivor of a zombie apocalypse, who is escorting Ellie, a young girl who is immune to an infection that turns people into zombies.While not technically zombies, the game's "infected" have been mutated by the fictional Cordyceps Brain Infection. The PS5 remake offers a painstakingly detailed world, fluid animation, sharp controls, and various options that were missing from the original version.
9 Resident Evil 2
First launched in the late 90s for PS1, Resident Evil 2 was remade in 2019 for the Playstation 4. The remake keeps all the creepy atmosphere of the original but expands on it with improved graphics and more areas to explore.
You choose to play as Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield, then set about trying to escape Raccoon City after its citizens turn into zombies due to a biological weapon created by the Umbrella Corporation. Most of the narrative sees you wandering around an abandoned police station filled with zombies. Following a few missteps in the Resident Evil series, this game returned to what made the series great.
8 Dead Cells
Released in 2017, Dead Cells is a less talked about title that will excite fans of classic era NES games like Castlevania. The game is tough, though. You can expect to make countless runs through levels. As you slowly progress through the game and discover new weapons and skills, you'll feel like you have achieved a major victory with each small progression.
Set on an abandoned island, you play as the Beheaded, a creature that possesses corpses. If you happen to die while playing as a possessed body, you will return from where you started and need to locate another corpse. The beautiful but immensely difficult game offers a fun challenge. While mired with many defeats, Dead Cells is a rewarding zombie experience.
7 Undead Nightmare
A 2010 expansion pack to Rockstar's blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare offers a silly take on the zombie genre in the form of a single-player campaign and multiplayer options. Originally released for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, the game can currently be played on PS4 and PS5.
The narrative sees John Marston on a quest to find a cure for his wife and son, who have been stricken with a zombie plague. Undead Nightmare offers a humorous take on the gigantic sandbox that is Red Dead Redemption. While some other zombies games venture into scary territory, Undead Nightmare is a fun campaign worth playing, even if it isn’t a full game.
6 Dying Light: The Following
Released in 2016, Dying Light: The Following is a follow-up to Dying Light. While the Dying Light series offers several great games, The Following is the pinnacle of this narrative so far.You play as Kyle Crane, who, after learning about a supposed cure to a zombie virus, sets out to investigate whether such a cure exists.
The game trades in the parkour elements from the first Dying Light for a more vehicle-based game. But if you’re going to slaughter zombies, customizable cars are a great way to do it. Overall, It's a enjoyable game with sharp visuals and serves a fun twist on the zombie genre. Plus, the story ends in a compelling way that will likely make you play the rest of the series.
5 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4
For years, Call of Duty entries have offered a Zombie mode. Beginning with Call of Duty: World At War, countless players have fallen in love with fighting zombies in these FPS games. Black Ops 4 is not a perfect game due to its small technical issues and reuse of maps from the previous Call of Duty games. But the title has a fantastic zombie mode.
Firstly, It contains two unique storylines for Zombies. The game also offers three maps: the RMS Titanic, a Gladiator arena, and a remake of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary from Black Ops 2. As such, Black Ops 4 is a welcome volume in the series and offers a wider variety of maps than Black Ops 3.
4 Dead Rising 2
The follow-up to the original and probably the best entry in the series, Dead Rising 2, takes all the great things about the first game and adds several unique twists to make this game feel original. One of the biggest introductions in the sequel is that you can combine various items you encounter in the mall to create deadly weapons. (Snowball cannon, anyone?)
Taking place several years after the first game, you play as motocross competitor Chuck Green who goes to Fortune City, Nevada, to participate in a game show where people kill zombies for money and fame. Naturally, it leads to a huge outbreak, which means hordes of zombies roam everywhere. You spend the game waving through them as you find away to escape the zombie-filled area.
3 Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
Another colorful and fun take on the zombie genre, Garden Warfare is the best in the Plants vs. Zombies series. The game features single-player as well as multiplayer options.
Taking place after the first Garden Warfare, the zombies have defeated the plants after Dr. Zomboss contacts a future version of himself and gets his hand on the Z-mech, which the Zombies pilot. The Zombies use the Z-mech against the plants to conquer Suburbia and rename the place, Zomburbia. The plants then wage war against the zombies to get their homes back. You can choose to play as either plants or zombies. Garden Warfare 2 is a fun zombie title with countless ways to customize the game. The game also introduces six new characters that will keep you entertained.
2 Fortnite: Save The World
First available for early access in 2017 and later released in 2020, Save the World is a fun addition to Fortnite and offers great action as well as engaging building systems. The game asks what happens when you combine Minecraft with Left 4 Dead.
The game is set on Earth, where the sudden appearance of a storm leads to the disappearance of 98 percent of the world's population. The survivors are left to fight zombies. Unfortunately, the missions in this game often become more monotonous the longer you play. Taken in small chunks, though, Save the World is a fun, enjoyable take on the zombie genre.
1 Death Road To Canada
Zombie games take a wide array of forms. Death Road to Canada mixes zombies with an Oregon Trail-like storyline. This game is tough, and the music plays like earworms, repeating over and over each time you die.
The game involves two survivors of a zombie apocalypse who go on a road trip to Canada to remain safe. The game takes place for two weeks as the two survivors try to reach the US/Canada border. Along the way, the players meet various characters who can join them on their journey. Sometimes, "siege" events occur where the player must survive a zombie horde for a fixed time. A basic but extremely enjoyable game, Death Road to Canada is a memorable take on the zombie genre. This is a road trip worth taking.
